| Last August 2, French TV program Capital hailed the success of Luxor, a luxury beverage made with Champagne, where genuine specks of 24-carat gold bubble. This is proof enough that tradition and prestige can harmoniously marry with innovation: the addition of specks of gold to a beverage made of Champagne is indeed no obvious task to do. A patent was filed to protect this technical making process...

Joint Committee held in Dijon for an International IP Cooperation between France and Taïwan (September 2008)
A joint committee presided by the Directors General of the TIPO in Taiwan – Mrs Mei-Hua WANG – and of the INPI in France – Mr BATTISTELLI, was held in Dijon from 7 to 9 September 2008.Going back to 1998, when France was the first foreign country to sign a bilateral technical cooperation agreement with Taiwan, the sustained relationships between the two countries has aimed at helping French corporations to have their IP rights respected on the booming economic market of Taiwan through several actions:
- harmonizing the legislations to avoid legal distortions,
- training experts, judges, custom officers, IP actors,
- implementing of common actions against counterfeiting.
Today, JurisPatent is happy that Taiwan has a reliable legal framework which should encourage French IP entrepreneurship…
New collaborator at JurisPatent:
We have the pleasure to welcome Mr. Olivier NISSOU, a legal consultant specialised in Intellectual Property, who has joined our Legal Department in July 2008.
LIBERALIZATION OF TOP LEVEL DOMAIN NAMES (July 2008)
The Board of ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) has recently approved of the expansion of top level domain names, which should be effective in the second quarter of 2009. The current 21 top level domain names, such as the most famous .com, or .eu, will have to rub shoulders with new names that may vary infinitely, thereby leading the way to endless possibilities to customize Internet addresses.
Indeed it will be possible to file top level domain names as different as the generic designations of one’s business segment (.furniture, .translation, etc.), the name of one’s firm or city, whether it be in latin characters or not, which is also new.
New opportunities will open up, which are very likely to foster trademark infringement acts, even though only the trademark owners will be allowed to file their won trademark as top level domain names.
Despite the safeguards designed by the ICANN – which reserves the right to refuse names contrary to public morality and order, which will rely on an international arbitration body to settle litigation problems and which intends to put up for auction the names several parties whic to acquire – this liberalization means that new investments are looming large for companies careful to protect their trademarks and ready to buy away the spectre of cybersquatting…
